Crater Lake 3

One of the high lites of the rim drive around the crater is reviewing the Pinnacles. The Pinnacles are located at the end of a 7 mile spur road. A colorful collection of 100 foot tall spires are being eroded from the canyon wall. The spires are "fossil fumaroles," each marking a spot where volcanic gas rose up through hot ash deposits, cementing the ash into solid rock. We walked about a 1/4 mile along this narrow canyon, the tail ending at a sign marking the East side of Crater Lake National Park.
